That Can’t Be
Part IV
Written by Cassia Sherrill
The service at the church was finishing up, and those who wanted to join were given the address to the burial site. Steven immediately turned around to catch another glance at the mysterious woman in the back of the church to ensure she was still there. She was, and she was talking to a few people that he didn’t know. He got Heather and Josh’s attention and pointed the mysterious woman out.
“Do we know her?”
“Who are we looking at?” Josh asked.
Heather squinted her eyes, “Are you talking about the woman standing up?”
“No,” Josh subtly pointed towards the woman, “I am talking about that woman there...the one sitting down with dark hair. Does she look familiar to you?”
“I don’t think so, but I am not good with faces…” Josh glanced at Heather. “Honey, you are better with remembering faces. Do you recognize her?”
“I don’t think so. Where do you think you know her from?”
“That’s the thing...I really have no clue, but she seems incredibly familiar. Should I go say something or what?”
“Maybe Swayze introduced you to her a while back?” Heather questioned. “If you feel like you should talk to her then go for it.”
“But you better hurry. It looks like she’s leaving!” Josh mentioned.
“Oh shoot! I will meet you guys back at the car, okay?” Steven said as he darted towards the back of the church. The woman had just stepped off the front steps of the church when he caught up with her. “Hey, excuse me, ma’am?”
She turned her head and gave him a weird look. “Um...hi?”
“Sorry, I know this is so random, but do we know each other?”
“I don’t think so…” she said as she looked incredibly uncomfortable.
“I am sorry...I didn’t mean to be awkward. It’s just that I saw you, and you looked so familiar. But I cannot figure out where. Forgive me...my name is Steven. I was Swayze’s bo-” he hesitated before continuing. “I was a great friend of hers. How did you know Swayze?”
“Swayze and I were friends in middle and high school. Maybe you saw some old pictures of us or something?”
Steven nodded at the possibility and was about to comment back when she cut him off.
“Anyway, it was nice meeting you, and that was a beautiful speech you gave for her.” She looked quickly around before saying, “But I really got to go.” She offered him a skittish smile before walking over to her car in the parking lot.”
“Hey, I didn’t catch your name?”
She stopped right as she opened her car door and hesitated. She let out a deep sigh before calling out, “Uh...my name is Macy.”
“It was nice meeting you, Macy!” She gave a slight wave before she got in her car and drove off. Steven stood there and watched her drive off. That was definitely one of the most awkward exchanges, and he still had no clue how or where he knew her.
He made his way to Josh’s car where Josh and Heather were waiting for him. He got into the car, and as they were driving to the cemetery, Josh asked how their exchange went.
“Honestly, guys, that was the weirdest conversation I have ever had…”
“What happened?” Heather looked back at him since he was in the backseat. “Did you figure out how you knew her?”
“No...I didn’t. She said she knew Swayze from middle and high school, but I don’t recall meeting any of her friends from back then.”
“So weird...maybe you saw a picture of her or something?” Heather asked as she turned back around.
“Yeah, she mentioned that. Maybe that was it...I don’t really know,” he admitted as he stared out of the car window.
