The Statue
Part I
Written by Cassia Sherrill
“I’ve lived in New York City pretty much my whole life. My parents moved here for work when I was seven, and since then, the big city has been my home. I love it here, but boy, I am not a fan of all the tourists...”
Zoe cuts Chelsea off, “Hey! Ouch! I am a tourist here, and I am offended.”
Chelsea laughed, “Chill. Yes, you are a tourist, but you are my tourist.”
“And how on earth does that make any difference?” Zoe takes a sip of her iced tea.
“Because you, as my tourist, are not going to do any of the lame stuff that everyone does. Trust me, I will show and get you into all of the cool things that you need to see. You showed me a fantastic, non-touristy trip when I visited you in Spain, and I am now determined to do the same for you.”
The two ladies stepped onto their newly arrived subway headed uptown. “Yay, that sounds perfect. I am beyond excited,” Zoe said as she grabbed hold of the subway’s pole. The subway was full because of rush hour. “Oh, I do have one place that I really want to go.”
“Where?”
Zoe accidentally bumps into the person beside her, and she says,”Excuse me.” The older man scoffs at her, and she, wide-eyed, turns back to Chelsea. “Uh, my friends told me about a statue that they took pictures of whenever they visited. It is kind of lame, but the rumor about the statue is that when the statue touches hands with their soulmate the statue will become human.”
Chelsea was taking a sip of her coffee when Zoe said that, and she almost spit it up from laughter. Now coughing, Chelsea responded, “You’re kidding, right? That’s actually a thing?”
“I know it’s so lame, but I want to go see the statue. I want to send a pic of me with it to my friends just to humor them. Also, it will be a solid instagram pic, and you know it!” Zoe winked at Chelsea.
Chelsea rolled her eyes at her friend’s crazy request. Moaning, she asked, “I feel I am going to regret asking this, but where is this magical lonely statue located?”
“I have the address for it. We are going uptown currently, right?” Chelsea nods. “Perfect, we could honestly visit it today and get it over with. That way we can get my silly tourist request out of the way.”
Chelsea couldn’t help but laugh at her friend’s excitement at seeing a statue. “Fine. We will go, but you know this is so dumb, right?”
Zoe smiled wide. “Oh, I one hundred percent know this is the lamest request I have ever made, but I love it. It’s going to be fun.”
“Let me see the address and figure out where we need to get off.” Zoe hands her phone over, and after looking at it for a few moments, she says, “Alright, at the next stop, we have to transfer to another train, but once we are on that one, we only have to go two stops up. Seems easy enough.”
“Yay! You are already the best NYC tour guide ever, and who knows, maybe one of us will touch the statue’s hand and find the love of our lives!”
“Oh please! Don’t be ridiculous!” Chelsea laughed as they got off their current train and walked to the connecting platform. “Or I will regret saying yes!”
